A Midsummer Knots Dream

1983 to ‘1855’ – and not a TARDIS in sight !
After retiring from a long career in teaching and the Civil Service in 2021, we moved to Dorset a year later and the world of macramé entered my life shortly after that. From a very early age, I’ve had a deep-rooted love of theatre (I have my mum to thank for this!) and in 2023 it was my 40th anniversary (yes, showing my age) of seeing the award-winning RSC productions of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and Rostand’s ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ which starred Sir Derek Jacobi and Sinead Cusack in the lead roles of Benedick/Beatrice and Cyrano/Roxane respectively. On this special occasion I asked these wonderful actors to autograph some mementos for me and was delighted when they did so. To say thank you, I sent them some appropriately-themed macramé plant holders which they loved and sent me their very best wishes. Thrilled and inspired by this, I decided to base all my creations on the colourful and interesting characters in the plays I love using recycled cotton braided cords and other natural materials. They say ‘knotting ventured, knotting gained’ (or something very like it) so I’m proceeding with this business idea in that spirit and I really hope you like my creations too.
‘To be or knot? To be that is the question’

Avlaki Ltd

In 1996, painter Deborah MacMillan and broadcaster Natalie Wheen pooled resources to buy and restore a small ruin on the coast of Lesvos, as an escape from London stress. The land was planted with olive trees in a sad and neglected condition. They became olive farmers quite by accident.
Unimpressed by the local traditional farming practices Deborah and Natalie introduced methods researched from the latest scientific information and immediately adopted strict Organic farming practices. The fields are kept as natural as possible to encourage bio-diversity:all kinds of bushes and trees provide cover for wildlife and the groves team with birds and insects.

Dorset Blends

"Hi, we are Dorset Blends Limited, a small family business near Wimborne hand crafting Spice, Herb & Salt Blends. Our passion for great food has evolved from a love of travel, and particularly the distinctive styles of cuisine, the ingredients and the spices and herbs used in the countries we have been fortunate to visit. From spice, salt and herb grinders to tinned rubs and packets of herbs and breadcrumbs, we have created a mouth-watering range of products to be used in a variety of ways. Produced in small batches, all our products are hand crafted to our own recipes, developed with help from family, friends and from feedback from repeat customers. We source our raw ingredients from UK Wholesalers and our preference is to use whole spices and herbs as much as possible as these provide more flavour, especially with our grinders! Whether for yourself or as a gift, we hope you enjoy what we offer as much as we do!! Chris & Sarah, Dorset Blends Limited."

Lindsay Buck is the artist behind Slumbermonkey Designs and is based in rural North Dorset, where she works from her little garden studio. Inspiration comes from the countryside around her, the birds, flowers, animals and plants that can be glimpsed in the garden and beyond. Also evident is a love of the Mid-Century aesthetic. Lindsay’s work aims to make you smile, to brighten your day and instil a sense of childlike curiosity and wonder.

LOBI_Faire_Cover_photo.jpg

Susi Gardner Artist

As a wildlife and pet portrait artist my inspiration for the art comes from nature and wildlife, I paint using traditional oils in realism and try to capture the essence and soul of the animal I paint. I have a passion to support wildlife conservation, and aim to highlight the plight of some of the worlds most rarest and unique animals through the art I create. I use a layering process on canvas, which gives the depth to the fur, with the final layer I use a thinning medium to create the detail needed to capture their essence.
My passion for wildlife and art came from childhood which due to being home educated I had classes with a local artist who specialised in oils. He was an inspiration to me because he captured animals in such a unique and captivating way he was really the one that taught me the basics and also gave me the passion and love that I have for oils.
After a 20 year gap, i rediscovered my passion for painting in oils again in lockdown. My aim for the future is to be able to bring the connection between art and nature, ever closer, and create new pieces to inspire people to support wildlife conservation and be honoured to capture the soul and beauty of the animals who are part of our everyday family life

Chris Oswald – Author

I loved history from the earliest moment. We started at school with the dinosaurs before, logically, moving onto cavemen. History blows my mind, as does story-writing. I've finally put the two together. I'm self published, which means doing it the hard way, or the way of the future, depending on your point of view.
I love the idea of redemption, the 'baddies' discovering something good about themselves, often at the last moment. My writing also shows the lingering, intrusive nature of history, poking itself into the present time and again to create the future.

Fran Griffiths Textile Maker

Whilst I’ve always been interested in general sewing - clothes for my various dolls as a child, and
later for myself - I really only focussed on textile art during the late 1990’s early 2000’s.
I am largely self-taught, although I have taken workshops to understand particular techniques
such as using a soldering iron, and materials such as Tyvek.
I dye, paint and print on recycled sheets and paper. I use a mix of media, collage and stitching to
achieve the results I want. I take a lot of photos both on travels and home. These are the basis of
inspiration but rarely used exclusively. I work intuitively - responding to the marks on the piece until I am pleased with the outcome.

snip into shapes to create my work. Whenever possible I
like to use recyclable materials.
I am open to commission work, you may have a colour
scheme or plate(s) that could be made into something
creative, perhaps a gift or keepsake for a special
occasion. It would certainly be bespoke.

Conscious to use only native hard woods that are locally sourced to creat contemporary figurative and fluid abstract forms. March Made Art

I specialize in fluid acrylics, eschewing conventional brushes in favor of harnessing the elemental
tools of water, fire, airflow, and gravity. This unconventional approach, where creativity meets
alchemy, defines my artistic ethos. For me, art is a playful exploration, to capture the essence of
my surroundings.
Inspired by Dorset's landscapes—the sea's vibrant hues, the shifting skies, and the rugged coast.
Each artwork is a testament to their beauty and dynamism. I seek to capture their essence on
canvas, a reflection of the ever-changing rhythms of nature.
I believe in the transformative power of art, both in its creation and its consumption, to heal,
inspire, and uplift. Ultimately, my goal as an artist is to create pieces that resonate on a profound
level, transcending mere visual appeal to stir emotions, provoke contemplation, and spark a
dialogue with the natural world.

Mari Moo Creations

I am Mari from MariMoo Creations, based in Wareham. I started my small business in July 2021. At that time, I wanted to make jewellery but wasn't sure exactly what. I did some research and discovered that (with the exception of recycled metal) stainless steel was the most eco friendly option. It was also affordable and resistant to tarnishing and corrosion. I prefer fairly delicate jewellery, so that is what I decided to focus on.

Nut Bloom Crafts

Following a major stroke in 2015 John was looking for a way to keep himself occupied. Having enjoyed wood turning at school in South Africa in his teens he bought a lathe and taught himself to turn left handed. Using mainly scrap or recycled timber he now works from his garden shed, producing lamps, bowls, platters etc. No two pieces are the same. Commissions are taken and John is always willing to pass on his skills to anyone interested.

Pygmipony

I started knitting as a hobby but over the years it became an obsession. I like knitting with wool from independent dyers but in reality no yarn is safe from me.

The Cheeseman Dorset

Martin Rose, known as The Cheeseman, Dorset was milking cows and supplying milk to Ford Farm in the early 2000’s. He started buying vintage cheddar back for friends in the local skittles team and that slowly grew into supplying Jimmy Loader, the local butcher in Sturminster Newton. Over the years, he has expanded into supplying many varieties of Ford Farm & Barber's cheese into delis, farm cafes, butcheries, pubs and small shops. The Cheeseman, Dorset also attends local shows where he offers tastings and sales of all the favourites as well as the new flavours on the market.
