1983 to ‘1855’ – and not a TARDIS in sight !
After retiring from a long career in teaching and the Civil Service in 2021, we moved to Dorset a year later and the world of macramé entered my life shortly after that. From a very early age, I’ve had a deep-rooted love of theatre (I have my mum to thank for this!) and in 2023 it was my 40th anniversary (yes, showing my age) of seeing the award-winning RSC productions of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and Rostand’s ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ which starred Sir Derek Jacobi and Sinead Cusack in the lead roles of Benedick/Beatrice and Cyrano/Roxane respectively. On this special occasion I asked these wonderful actors to autograph some mementos for me and was delighted when they did so. To say thank you, I sent them some appropriately-themed macramé plant holders which they loved and sent me their very best wishes. Thrilled and inspired by this, I decided to base all my creations on the colourful and interesting characters in the plays I love using recycled cotton braided cords and other natural materials. They say ‘knotting ventured, knotting gained’ (or something very like it) so I’m proceeding with this business idea in that spirit and I really hope you like my creations too.

Hi, my name is Trevor Heath and my brass crafting originated from my precision engineering background. Although I currently work as a gardener, I've recently found myself delving into my engineering past, knee deep in cogs, gears and grease while turning chunks of brass into homeware wonders from keyrings to solid brass candlesticks. It's a blend of artistry and precision engineering. All the brass items I make are from solid stock brass and machined in my small workshop on a metal lathe. As a child there were three things I loved to do, draw, ride ponies and climb trees oh and create rock pools. ☺
Recently I discovered Pastels and other mediums and began to enjoy drawing again and has made me realise that there are many forms and styles of Art it is not just about wielding a brush.

I learnt to knit and crochet from my grandmother’s and after lockdown started spinning my own wool, which I have always wanted to do. This has led me to other avenues such as needle felting, weaving, Tunisian crochet and my new craft of Dorset buttons.

We moved to Sturminster Newton from Hertfordshire 6 years ago and wild horses couldn't drag us back.. We have both been avid collectors and dealers of Art & Antiques for 30 years. Very pleased to be part of the 1855 experience.

We are a multi award-winning ginger drinks company based in Poole. Our drinks are perfect mixers for cocktails and mocktails but equally delicious on their own.

I sell items from Nemesis Now - everything from dragon to fairy’s, black cats to skulls and everything in between. I also make jewellery at every day prices so everyone can afford . The jewellery is a bit different too .

Whilst I’ve always been interested in general sewing - clothes for my various dolls as a child, and
later for myself - I really only focussed on textile art during the late 1990’s early 2000’s.
I am largely self-taught, although I have taken workshops to understand particular techniques
such as using a soldering iron, and materials such as Tyvek.
I dye, paint and print on recycled sheets and paper. I use a mix of media, collage and stitching to
achieve the results I want. I take a lot of photos both on travels and home. These are the basis of
inspiration but rarely used exclusively. I work intuitively - responding to the marks on the piece until I am pleased with the outcome.

Isabella is a multi-media art student who creates her work in her grandfather’s workshop in Child Okeford.
Having grown up in the countryside Isabella is inspired by nature and animals.

I love to reuse and recycle whenever possible and when I discovered plantable paper, my stationery range grew.
I now produce greetings cards, notebooks, gift tags, wedding favours, bunting, Christmas decorations, confetti and much more all made and printed in my studio in Sturminster Newton, and all from UK made plantable seeded paper and card. The paper is handmade in the UK with a mix of meadow and garden flower seeds in which produce flowers that will help with rewilding and attracting the Butterflies and Bees.

Katie is a well established Fine Artist specialising in equestrian, landscape and canine drawings and paintings. Since graduating in 2000 with an Honours Degree in Fine Art from Plymouth University, Katie has been working full time as an artist with her most notable commission to date being Artist in Residence to the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment between 2011-2012. In 1855 Katie is exhibiting her prints as well as a selection of paintings and drawings. She also has a Gallery in Hinton St Mary which is open all year round to the public and she welcomes commissions: equine, canine and landscape.

Pawsome Scents owner Bec, didn't realise until getting a dog just how harmful some commercially available candles can be to our pooches. Paraffin wax along with several synthetic fragrances are extremely toxic and can have severe consequences for our beloved 4 legged friends.
After lengthy research and development, Pawsome Scents was born. Using our knowledge to provide deliciously scented, beautifully looking scented candles whilst remaining safe to burn around dogs.

Chocolate covered Medjool Date Boxes. Our Chocolate Date journey started in 2021 at an old job of mine
when I needed to throw a healthier, quick sweet treat together to fill a gap in the cake fridge and to my
surprise, they were VERY popular! I then went on to offer them at charity bake sales I hosted for local
animal welfare charities, alongside other sweet bakes and the feedback I received from just the
Chocolate Dates was amazing! So that was when I decided to go for it! The ingredients in all our flavour
ranges will always be 100% Plant-Based and Organic, I will always try to source them from small
independently owned businesses as well as making an effort to keep our packaging as recyclable or
compostable as we can!

Quantum Cannons are handmade using specialist tools and lots of man hours labour. These are not your typical pewter/metal production cannons available in vast quantity and machine driven found on the market today. Every cannon is made with its own unique precision from scratch. Although these cannons have working parts, these are not toys and should be treated as decorative cannons only. These cannons are made from metals and wood of the same types that were used in full scale originals.

Inspired by the human form and its many representations, my wood sculptures are created using a subtractive process, which reveals the inherent qualities of the wood. All of which is waste and commercially unworkable. This allows me to embrace the natural imperfections , structural deformities, unusual organic growth which reflect the life of the Tree. Growth and movement are organically linked and by sculpting the limbs, trunks and roots, I feel that I give the Tree new life and form.
All sculpture is treated allowing the piece to continue its existence outside or inside. Advice on installation and preservation is important and always offered. Plinths can be made to your specific needs.

Soul Creations is my new passion, I handcraft pictures from card to create a beautiful art piece. Made for you to enjoy and hopefully bring a smile to the person receiving them. I have always loved making things and spent hours doodling from a young age. To me there is nothing better than zoning our from the stresses of the world, with music on making something beautiful.

Sun & Flower soaps have been formulated ‘from the herb garden’ and you’ll notice that most include common plants or herbs that you could be growing outside your back door! We strive to use suppliers sourcing ethically produced, organic or fairtrade ingredients and ensure that none of our ingredients are on any endangered species list. Our essential oils are sourced as much as possible from the UK or Europe to ensure a smaller carbon footprint. Each soap (other than our plain shea butter) contains a combination of essential oils, and we hope you find the scents pleasing and uplifting!

Martin Rose, known as The Cheeseman, Dorset was milking cows and supplying milk to Ford Farm in the early 2000’s. He started buying vintage cheddar back for friends in the local skittles team and that slowly grew into supplying Jimmy Loader, the local butcher in Sturminster Newton. Over the years, he has expanded into supplying many varieties of Ford Farm & Barber's cheese into delis, farm cafes, butcheries, pubs and small shops. The Cheeseman, Dorset also attends local shows where he offers tastings and sales of all the favourites as well as the new flavours on the market.

The Dorset Handmade Food Company was born out of local Cafe and catering company 'Thyme after time' in Stalbridge owned by local business lady Margot Annelle Foot after lockdown to enable us to sell and post all over the UK. The demand for us to post out our wares was increasing all the time so we decided to have an ecommerce presence made perfect sense!

Rachael Rowe is a writer and journalist based in North Dorset and is one of the team that organises Sturminster Newton Literary Festival every year. She loves travel and has just authored a science themed guidebook to London. Rachael is under contract for three more non-fiction books

Amelia J's Crafting was then born, with the name paying homage to Sam's late Mum who loved bunting all around her home. Carolyn joined the business after retirement. Her enthusiasm and skills create bespoke, knitted bunting which are embellished with pom poms, charms, buttons and beads. In 1996, painter Deborah MacMillan and broadcaster Natalie Wheen pooled resources to buy and restore a small ruin on the coast of Lesvos, as an escape from London stress. The land was planted with olive trees in a sad and neglected condition. They became olive farmers quite by accident.
Unimpressed by the local traditional farming practices Deborah and Natalie introduced methods researched from the latest scientific information and immediately adopted strict Organic farming practices. The fields are kept as natural as possible to encourage bio-diversity:all kinds of bushes and trees provide cover for wildlife and the groves team with birds and insects.

Jim Carter is the author of Hearts of Steel, written from extensive research into the career of his Great Grandfather in the Royal Navy between 1918 and 1945. Using long out of print publications, archive material from the National Archives and the Imperial War Museum, he describes life on a RN Warship in the East Indies before the outbreak of World War 2 and re-assignment to the Destroyer HMS Nubian. Intense active service follows in Norway and the Eastern Mediterranean. Nubian participates in the battles of Calabria and Matapan culminating in the Battle for Crete where the crews of the Royal Navy are pushed to breaking point.

Hi, I'm Laura Drew and I love to draw! (See what I did there?!) All my products start out as drawing or sketch before I edit and develop mu designs using the computer. After a career break from teaching I had a dream of making a living being creative and with the support of the Prince's trust enterprise programme I've managed to turn the dream into a reality! I loved history from the earliest moment. We started at school with the dinosaurs before, logically, moving onto cavemen. History blows my mind, as does story-writing. I've finally put the two together. I'm self published, which means doing it the hard way, or the way of the future, depending on your point of view.
I love the idea of redemption, the 'baddies' discovering something good about themselves, often at the last moment. My writing also shows the lingering, intrusive nature of history, poking itself into the present time and again to create the future.

As a teenager I fell in love with Dorset; in 1973 I started my first job at Poole General Hospital as a
Diagnostic Radiographer. My son was born the following year, 4 years later my husband died so I
brought Ian up as a single mum. In 2010, I married Ryan who hails from Zimbabwe and together we
have explored Dorset, chatting with local residents and taking hundreds of photographs! Like many I
have been fascinated by the unusual place names. The result is Downstream Dorset !
My hope is that Downstream Dorset will inspire others to discover ‘treasures’ and create memories - with
blank pages at the back of the book for notes.
20% of all proceeds will be donated to the charity, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, who serve both
residents and visitors with their dedication and skills.

When we started this adventure into the world of beads, myself at least 30 years ago and Lorraine a mere novice of 3 years we never dreamt it would take up so much of our lives. We have the 'bug'!! As most people who do this handicraft will say, it takes over our homes. We ave 'stuff' everywhere was can find a slot to fit it in, including long suffering husbands!! Marjorie Kate Crochet was born in lockdown when I re-discovered a skill learnt from my Grandmother as a child. My new found hobby soon got out of hand and I needed to find an outlet for it so I could keep crocheting!

Paul Wallis is a marquetry artist who brings new life to an ancient craft. Marquetry, the art of creating intricate images using wood veneers has captivated him since he began training as a furniture maker in retirement. Drawn to the natural beauty of wood, Paul works with veneers sourced from diverse tree species, each offering unique grain patterns and colours. Some veneers are stained to create more vivid and contemporary compositions. Inspired by the fluid elegance of Art Noveau and the refined simplicity of Japanese prints, Paul's work reflects a modern take on this traditional technique using a blend of modern materials and age-old craftmanship, he allows the marquetry itself to become the focal point, displaying his creations as standalone framed works rather than as decorative elements on furniture. Paul's work offers a glimpse into his passion for reviving a largely forgotten discipline and presenting it in a fresh, modern context.

I started knitting as a hobby but over the years it became an obsession. I like knitting with wool from independent dyers but in reality no yarn is safe from me.

Hello, my name is Richard and I work with an Italian designer called Ricardo Toro,who lives and works in a small village in the Italian alps where I met him while snowboarding there. We both have a love for design and making wonderful things. We design everything with a pencil and paper and everything is handmade, no A.I. or robots involved. We try and sell our things in shops and galleries, which is why we don't have an online presence. For all those with a discerning and quirky disposition, we hope you love what you find. That means a lot to us.

I cannot remember a time when I didn't knit. Now in retirement I can indulge in the pleasurable activity of fair isle whilst listening to Radio 4. I always use natural fibres, wool or alpaca in gorgeous colours. Patchwork came later as a way of using up scraps from dressmaking. I love combining colours with shapes.

Smiley Myley Dog Accessories selling luxury items founded by Tim and Claire Downer, with the assistance of their scruffy Yorkshire Terrier, Mylo.
"Mylo is our world and has us round his little paw, as we do spoil him (don't we all?) He is a happy doggie and it looks like he smiles a lot . . . so when we decided to name a Dog accessories business, it was a given that we would call it 'Smiley Myley' after Mylo". And so, Smiley Myley Dog Accessories was born.

I started getting involved with Arts and Crafts at the age of 6. My mother taught me to sew, by hand at first and then later using her trusty old Singer sewing machine. This developed into Tailoring and I made many of my clothes through the 60's. I also developed a love of drawing and painting which augmented my pocket money. Over the years I have extended my skills to include Carpentry, particularly unique doors and making detailed models of Trains, Daleks, Cybermen, The Tardis. I also make Cake decorations which have included a Piano, a West Highland White's head, a fork lift truck and the Trotters 3 wheel van. I love a challenge and am very self critical so will go to great lengths to ensure peoples satisfaction.

In my spare time I love to geek out on digital sculpture and use my 3D printer. My husband and I love being in the garden spending time with the chickens and our cat Ozzie x

We are a husband and wife team who both had to leave mainstream teaching due to poor mental health. We settled in to new occupations but needed to supplement or income so we turned to our hobby of blacksmithing to come to the rescue.
